So I have recently bought a bunch of cds and now I shall expound on the merits and demerits of each.
Sufjan Stevens- Come on, Feel the Illionoise: not quite a follow-up to Michigan, but certainly the next phase of his conquering of the states, Sufjan captures the essence of a state again. Well, I think he does. I don't live in Illinois and have only been there a couple time (to the country, not Chicago), but the music paints a picture for me that is hauntingly beautiful. John Wayne Gacy, Carl Sandburg, the death of a close friend.. all subjects that Sufjan can write about song elegantly and freely. There is a bundle of emotion in these songs that I cannot quite put my finger on, as if it's all the emotions I want to feel at the same time.
White Stripes-Get Behind Me Satan: So I'd never heard the White Stripes before. I've heard all about them. Maybe I saw them on SNL once. I really didn't know what kind of music they made. I'll be honest and say that the reason I picked up their cd was a mix between curiousity over their stardom and because the album title is so great. It's definitely an interesting mix of music, but it's so catchy that natalie and i kept singing at each other lines from the cd. It's grown on me in the last few days.
Blood Brothers-Burn, Piano Island, Burn: With the influx of new cds, I haven't been able to listen to this one very much at all. Umm.. I'll get back to this one in the future.
Headphones-Headphones: Matt and I went and saw them play last Saturday. I had only listened to their songs once on their purevolume site. The live show set me straight that I really love it. I got tired of David's voice with Pedro. It got really dreary, the music was a downer (not just emotionally or lyrically, but tempo and mood), and it just got old, but David's voice fits so well with this electronic stuff. They set each other off so nicely- his voice creeping along, and the electronic sounds giving it some kind of push. Magical lyrics still abound- simple but resonating.
Crystal Skulls-I can't remember the name of the cd: Heard them open for the Headphones and was sold on their sound. Semi-loungey-act sounding, the lead singer's voice is gorgeous and he pulls off the songs effortlessly. Although I think they have gotten one particular sound incredibly right, it seems to carry through the whole cd without a ton of change for the listener. But it still is fun, catchy, and a great listen. I'm a fan.
