may twenty seventh two thousand three

Today the sun met my shoulder
and left its mark

Tonight the window is down
The downbeat is prominent
and vibrating against my calf
While the lock on the glove box rattles
warm and windy, it is perfect
the lights are bright
just enough to
capture attention and make wandering eyes
set their gaze for a moment
long bangs flutter against my face
in the wind
on a normal night I would care
would persistently push them back
but tonight is different
My arm is out the window
fifty five mph, it is set against a backdrop
of stars and city lights- mingling
